Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has just signed the SIM Card Registration Act into law. Prior to this, the act passed in the Senate and the House of Representatives in December 2021 and earlier last month, respectively.

The SIM Card Registration Act requires all public telecommunication entities (PTE) or direct sellers to ask buyers/subscribers to fill up a form that will have the information and present a valid government ID with a photo before selling SIM cards to users.

The information given is confidential unless authorized by the subscriber or upon an issued subpoena or order from a court.

Additionally, under the new law, PTEs are given 30 days to submit a list of authorized sellers to the National Telecommunications Communication. The list will be updated by the PTE quarterly.
