After numerous leaks and rumors surrounding the Ryzen 7000 CPUs, AMD has officially unveiled the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs built on TSMC’s 5-nanometer process. The new 5nm Ryzen 7000 series is built on the new Zen 4 core architecture with a slew of firsts for AMD such as PCIe Gen 5 bandwidth and DDR5 memory support. Zen 4 desktop processors have a 13% IPC uplift compared to previous Zen 3 processors resulting in up to 29% single thread performance gain over its predecessor.
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
AMD Ryzen 9 7950X is the flagship processor under the 7000 series, replacing the three-year-old Ryzen 9 5950X and rivaling Intel’s Core i9 12900K processor. AMD showed slide comparisons of the Ryzen 9 7950X pitted against the i9 12900K in V-ray running a content creation demo render, resulting in a 61% score difference in favor of the 7950X. Moreover, AMD boasted an overall performance gain of 57% and 47% better energy efficiency than Intel 12th Gen offerings.
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X sports the same 12-core, 24-thread configuration with faster clockspeeds of 4.7 GHz base and 5.6 GHz boost compared to the Ryzen 9 5900X. The Ryzen 9 7900X also has a cache size of 76MB and a TDP of 170W, 65W higher than its predecessor.
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
Replacing the Ryzen 9 5800X is the AMD Ryzen 9 7700X with an 8-core, 16-thread configuration in a 105W TDP package. Clock speeds have significantly improved compared to the previous generation as the Ryzen 7700X has a base speed of 4.5 GHz with boost clocks up to 5.4 GHz compared to the 5800X’s 3.8GHz base and 4.7GHz boost.
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X will probably be the most popular processor in the Ryzen 7000 laptop with AMD stating 11% faster performance compared to the flagship Intel Core i9 12900K in F1 2022. AMD claims the Ryzen 5 7600X to have a 5% faster average gaming performance over the 12900K in 1080p.
AMD Socket AM5 & AMD 5 Motherboards
Alongside a new CPU family is a set of motherboards under the new AM5 socket. AMD teased the Ryzen 7000 series in the last Computex 2022 keynote with the main highlight of switching from PGA to an LGA-based socket. AM5 has a 1718-pin LGA socket resulting to up to 230W socket power delivery headroom. The new AM5 platform also offers the very first PCI-E Gen 5 feature on consumer motherboards as well as support for DDR5 memory technology. Compatibility-wise, AM4 coolers will work on AM5 motherboards. However, there is no backward compatibility with DDR4 memory, unlike Intel’s 600 chipset motherboards
In the earlier Computex 2022 keynote, AMD only introduced three AM5 motherboard chipsets namely the X670E, X670, and B650. Today’s launch has an additional B650E motherboard that sits between X670 and B650 chipsets. AMD X670E chipset motherboards will support every feature available on the platform such as Wifi 6E, all PCI-E Gen 5 lanes, and DDR5 memory support while the X670 chipset has slightly lower bandwidth with only the x16 slot and one storage slot running on PCI-E gen 5. B650 chipset motherboard will reportedly support PCI-E Gen 5 storage. As of writing, AMD hasn’t announced detailed information on the difference between the B650E and B650 chipsets.
AMD brand partners such as ASUS and MSI have already announced their respective X670E and X670E motherboards together with its PH SRPs.
AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Pricing and Availability
AMD has surprisingly retained its pricing levels despite the debut of smaller process node, new features, and global inflation. To compare, the Ryzen 9 5950X launched for $799 while the current flagship AMD Ryzen 9 7950X retails for $699. The Ryzen 9 7900X is priced at $549 while the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7600X are priced at $399, and $299 respectively. The new AMD Ryzen 7000 series will be available globally starting September 27, 2022 alongside the X670E and X670 motherboards. We generally estimate a 10% to 20% price delta once it lands in the Philippines.
