The Department of Transportation (DOTr) mentioned in a press release that it has asked Google to include the Philippines’ bike lanes in Google Maps. DOTr Secretary Art Tugade mentioned that the department is already coordinating with Google on the project.

“We have asked Google to consider this suggestion-top priority considering the increasing number of Filipino cyclists. We are confident that we can win their support on this.”

He added that it will be a “very good innovation” for Google Maps especially with even more Filipinos primarily riding bikes to travel in the pandemic.

The department has already completed its 500km bike lane network in metros across the country. This includes bike lanes in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao and is funded under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

The bike lanes, according to the department, have “pavement markings, physical separators, solar-powered road studs, thermoplastic paints, road signages, and bike racks.”
