Samsung has just announced its next consumer flagship SSD – the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 SSD at CES 2020. This is the first consumer SSD to support PCIe 4.0, with it mostly being in the company’s high-end enterprise drives.

Samsung 980 PRO has sequential read/write speeds of up to 6,500/5,000 MB/s. This is slightly faster than PCIe 4.0 drives using the Phison E16 controller. Although, it is expected that we’ll see the Phison E18 and other controllers by the end of the year which offers sequential speeds at around 7GB/s. With faster tech coming this year, the speed of the 980 PRO may be a thing of the past.

The drive will be available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB which may indicate that the company uses 2-bit MLC for the PRO rather than 3-bit TLC NAND flash.

There is no timeline for availability and price, as these were just spotted at the Samsung booth at the convention.

That said though, he still has the mentality of "as long as it works" for his personal gadgets.
