According to a recent report, a data breach has hit Vivamax Philippines, a prominent video streaming service operated by VIVA Communications, Inc., and has comprised the personal information of its over 6.8 million subscribers.
Vivamax Philippines Data Breach
The breach was announced by a user identified as “BitBanish” and was offered for sale on a forum. It was said to be accessed via API scraping and authenticated with admin privileges.
The file is over 2.08GB in size and contains more than 6.8 million records in JSON format. It includes the subscribers:
- Full name
- Phone number
- Email address
- Country of registration
- Account creation dates
- Subscription IDs
- Subscription start and end time
- Subscription Type (Google, Huawei, Card, Apple, PayMaya)
- Parental Control PINs
Moreover, there’s a Subscribers’ Transaction data file that contains multiple transaction rows per subscriber, which is around 1.0GB in size.
The transaction data file contains information like subscription type, status, content ID, expire time, and Apple Subscription details.
The breach poses risks including identity theft, phishing attacks, and other cybercrimes.
Vivamax has not yet released an official statement responding to the reported data breach, as of writing this. We expect the company to address the incident and share the security measures to be taken, we will update this as soon as a statement is released.
If you’re affected, it is advised to monitor your financial and online accounts for unusual activity. Moreover, try to update your passwords for all your online accounts and implement multi-factor authentication when possible.
