Huawei P60 Pro, hyped by its Camera?
Huawei has always been known for producing smartphones with excellent camera capabilities, and the Huawei P60 Pro is no exception. The phone has impressive camera features that make it stand out from its competitors in the market.
Design
The Huawei P60 Pro comes in Black and Rococo Pearl colorways, both featuring distinctive textures. The Black variant boasts an Anti-Fingerprint Feather-Sand Glass, while the Rococo Pearl incorporates a unique Pearl Texture Design. Despite their visual appeal, the shimmer on the glass and the artistic presentation of the mother-of-pearl texture may not be everyone’s taste. While these design elements add a touch of luxury to the phone, they are seemingly hardly groundbreaking until you discover how it’s actually designed and made.
Display
The Huawei P60 Pro sports a 6.67-inch Quad-Curve LTPO screen with a 1-120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and a new generation Kunlun Glass. While it offers an immersive viewing experience, the P60 Pro’s display falls short of delivering a substantially different experience compared to its competitors. The IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance is not exclusive to Huawei, and the five-star drop-resistance certification from SGS in Switzerland, though impressive, does not guarantee the phone will survive daily wear and tear.
However, what is really striking in this department is its new generation Kunlun Glass. If there’s anything that will make people buy this – apart from its camera performance that I will talk about in a little bit – it’s how “shatter-proof” its display is.
Camera Performance
The Huawei P60 Pro boasts a massive F1.4 aperture and RYYB sensor, which significantly boosts light intake, resulting in sharp, rich, and high-contrast images. This feature is especially useful when capturing night cityscape shots or dimly-lit scenes, where details are usually lost in low-light environments. With its Ultra Lighting Telephoto Camera, the phone is perfect for taking stunningly sharp and clear photos, even when zooming in.
The phone’s camera is also great for taking portrait photos, as it can easily capture foreground and background subjects, even in low-light conditions. The large apertures – F/1.4 and F/2.1 – can also affect the background in terms of depth of field and the foreground subject in terms of focus, texture, and sharpness. The phone’s adjustable aperture from F/1.4 to F/4.0 also allows for greater flexibility in composing shots and playing with light.
What’s more impressive is that taking macro shots with the Huawei P60 Pro is a breeze. Unlike other phones, such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra or the iPhone 14 Pro Max, you don’t have to put the camera too close to the subject to take macro shots. Even from a distance, the camera can still produce high-quality macro shots with accurate colors, textures, and contrasts.
The Huawei P60 Pro‘s dynamic range capabilities are also worth mentioning. The phone is great for capturing sunrise and sunset shots, as it can accurately capture the details of both the highlights and shadows. With its excellent dynamic range, you can get shots that look just as good as if you had been using a professional camera. The colors are rich and vibrant, and the detail in both the highlights and shadows is just incredible.
The Huawei P60 Pro’s camera UI has also been improved, making it easier to control with one hand. You can now access settings like aspect ratio and other camera settings by just tapping or swiping from the bottom of the camera UI. The phone’s Pro Mode also lets you manually control the camera’s aperture, allowing for greater flexibility in composing your shots and playing with light.
Hardware, User Experience and Performance
In terms of hardware performance, the Huawei P60 Pro performs decently with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4G processor. Clearly, this will be outperformed by current flagship competitors in terms of mobile gaming, but not by a wide margin. Check out our performance benchmark results below for your reference.
The 4G connection, however, is very limiting in my opinion, especially now that 5G rollout in the country is vast and fast than ever before. If you’re looking for a “fast” device in terms of data network connectivity, this will set you back with what it currently offers.
Huawei has made improvements to the user interface, making it easier to control with one hand. Additionally, the Huawei App Gallery allows access to popular apps, which is a plus.
Battery performance
The Huawei P60 Pro is equipped with a 4815 mAh battery and an 88W special charger with Type A and Type C ports. Using the charger and cable, you can charge the phone from 0-50% in just 10 minutes. The phone is also IP68-rated for splash, water, and dust resistance, ensuring extra protection against daily mishaps.
In terms of battery performance, a single charge will last for 17 hours and 21 minutes with 20% remaining after using the device at relatively medium usage.
Verdict
The Huawei P60 Pro is both an engineering marvel and a gift for mobile photographers. Its camera performance is outstanding, and it outperforms its competitors in terms of image quality, ease of use, and versatility. The phone’s design and other features also make it an attractive choice for those looking for a premium phone.
While it may be suitable for mobile photography enthusiasts, the phone’s other features do not offer a vastly different experience compared to competitors such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra or the iPhone 14 Pro Max. With a price tag of PhP58,999 for the 8+256GB variant and PhP69,999 for the 12+512GB, potential buyers must carefully consider whether the P60 Pro is worth the investment. If you’re a mobile photographer or a content creator by heart, and you’ve got the money to spare, this is a must-buy. The features that got you hype will definitely be worth it. If not, you might be better off considering something else.
