The UK government has just announced that it is banning TikTok from government devices, following after the US, Canada, Belgium, and the European Commission announced the same. The ban takes immediate effect and was implemented due to security concerns.

TikTok Banned on UK Government Devices

“The security of sensitive government information must come first, so today, we are banning this app on government devices. The use of other data-extracting apps will be kept under review.”

Oliver Dowden, UK Cabinet Minister

The statement from Dowden hints that other apps are also under review and this is just the beginning.

The ban, of course, is only for government devices used for work with sensitive information. Government employees in the UK are still free to install the popular social media app on their personal devices.

“We believe these bans have been based on fundamental misconceptions and driven by wider geopolitics, in which TikTok, and our millions of users in the UK, play no part,” a company spokesperson said.
