Steam to stop support for WIndows 8.1 and older

Valve has just announced that Steam will stop supporting Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 OS starting January 1, 2024. After which, the client will stop running on those versions of Windows.

The company clarified in its statement that the change was due to core features in Steam relying on an embedded version of Google Chrome. This no longer works on older versions of Windows.

Additionally, future versions of the app will require Windows features and security updates. Microsoft ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and Windows 8.1 in January 2023.

Valve suggests updating to Windows 10, assuming you can, as soon as you can rather than waiting for January 2024 if you’re still running older Windows versions.
