Every two years, Sony releases high-end Bluetooth headphones and earbuds, and the Sony WF-1000XM5 true wireless earbuds are about to take the position of the WF-1000XM4 starting in 2021.

The new headphones just received FCC certification, and the photographs released as a result show that they are smaller than their predecessors. This news will certainly be met with sighs of relief left and right since the size was one of the primary problems with the M4s.

Sony has switched to using two connectors rather than three to charge the earbuds within the casing, and the material appears to be a matte plastic, just like the M4’s case. Although it’s difficult to tell from these context-free photographs how big the casing is, it could be smaller than the M4’s.

The case’s 5V 230mAh rating, which is higher than the 5V 140mAh rating the M4’s case received, could result in quicker charging. The LED is now on the front of the casing instead of within. Of course, wireless charging is available.

Similar to Sony’s LinkBuds S, the WF-1000XM5 is built in China. Now that certifications are ongoing and leaks are beginning to surface, they may become official shortly.
