OPPO initially unveiled its Reno8 series in the country back in August 2022 consisting of the Reno8 5G and Reno8 Z 5G. The company followed it up with the introduction of their big brother the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G.

The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G takes on the premium mid-range market by bumping up its display size and refresh rate. Additionally, it has a Dimensity 8100-Max chipset coupled with a whopping 12GB RAM.

Aside from this, it shares the rest of its specs with its vanilla sibling including the 80W SUPERVOOC Charge, the 50MP Sony IMX766 triple rear camera, and 32MP Sony IMX709 front camera.

How does the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G fare and perform in the real world? Here’s how our experience went.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G – Build and Design

The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G has a stunning design that is akin to modern minimalist kitchen cabinets mostly because of the glass with a glossy finish. We were given the Glazed Green which isn’t flashy in the age of bright colors and gradients, but it does catch the eye with its finish and with the OPPO Find X5-inspired camera module.

Speaking of the camera module, it is quite massive covering about two-thirds of the back panel but the softer blended-in design with the rest of the back does help a ton for me easing into its size. However, because of its sheer size and maybe even its design, I can see how it isn’t quite for everyone.

One downside to the glossy glass back of the rear panel though is that it is quite the fingerprint magnet. This, of course, can be fixed by using the included silicone case but I found it better to use the phone without the case despite the fingerprints.

The device has flat aluminum sides which give the device an even more premium feel to the hands. This also makes it easier to handle compared to other rounded-edge devices. Despite a flat side though, it didn’t feel sharp while being used and this is thanks to an angled finish to the corners rather than a 90° angle.

Its power button is found on the right of the device while its volume rockers are on the left. Meanwhile, at the bottom are its USB-C port flanked by the speaker grille on the right and the SIM tray on the left. Yup, no 3.5mm headphone jack, if that’s something you’re looking for.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G – Performance

Under the hood, the Reno8 Pro 5G has a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max chipset coupled with an impressive 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. If you need more RAM, you can double it with the Expanded RAM feature that converts storage to memory.

Before I get to my experience, here’s the result of AnTuTu, 3DMark, and Geekbench:

The Dimensity 8100-Max is an upper mid-range chipset that based on my experience is quite a capable chipset.

The SoC along with the high-capacity RAM and 120Hz AMOLED display offered a buttery smooth experience with day-to-day usage including browsing social media, reading emails, and watching videos.

This smooth experience goes as well when I tried gaming on the Reno8 Pro 5G. I was able to play games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Wild Rift, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Asphalt 9 at max settings with no hitch.

To push the chipset, I tried Genshin Impact and Diablo Immortal on their highest settings and while the device was able to handle it, there were stutters, especially in busier areas. The stutters were to be expected but what was surprising was that I was able to play them at max settings even for a bit.

However, I suggest lowering heavier games to either one step below the highest or medium settings. Just so the gaming experience isn’t that bad.

The device also handled heating pretty well even while I maxed out Genshin Impact and Diablo Immortal, it didn’t get too warm.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G – Camera

Around the back, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G is equipped with three cameras headed by a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera. This is joined by an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP macro sensor. It also has a MariSilicon X NPU to help with image processing.

Its rear camera setup, at this point, is pretty expected out of devices in recent times. A strong main sensor coupled with an ultrawide and a macro (or depth) lens.

The main sensor provides good color reproduction and detail even in the evening. However, you will need a steady hand, especially when taking photos at night as it takes a couple of seconds to process. It also delivered pretty well in the blurring of objects in the background.

The ultrawide lens has a 112° FoV which allows you to take in more of the landscape or even more of your group. This, however, seemed to give a softer tone to the photos.

Here are some samples from both the main and ultrawide cameras:

As with any 2MP camera, the 2MP macro lens on the Reno8 Pro 5G is pretty grainy. You are able to get up close and personal with things but you do give up quality.

These were taken with the macro lens:

Last is the 32MP Sony IMX709 camera. It offers good-quality photos with impressive detail and color separation. Additionally, you get the option to shoot at 0.8x which gives you a little more room for more friends or landscape in the photo.

I was even more impressed with Portrait mode which did a good job of blurring the background albeit with some artifacts. The artifacts were only spotted when I took a closer look at the photos though. So if you’re just looking for some photos for social media, it should be good.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G – Battery

The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G packs a 4500mAh battery. It isn’t the biggest, especially with most devices hitting at least 5000mAh nowadays. However, OPPO packed the Reno8 Pro 5G with 80W SuperVOOC technology.

Based on the PCMark Battery test, it offers 13 hours and 14 hours on 120Hz and 60Hz modes, respectively. I, of course, used the 120Hz mode and it still lasted around 12 hours of light to mid-use.

The 80W SuperVOOC technology definitely helps a ton. A full charge from 0% to 100% took only around 30 minutes. The downside though is that you do have to use the SuperVOOC charger that comes with it. On one hand, at least it comes with one, but on the other, it isn’t the smallest smartphone charger out there.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G – Software

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G Review ColorOS 13.0 1

On the software front, the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G runs on ColorOS 13 on top of Android 13 out of the box. This means you get the latest version of the company’s Android UI.

It has some carried-over features like Flexible Windows, Quick Launch, and Smart Sidebar. Flexible Windows allows you to do more with floating windows. These can all be turned off but some, like Quick Launch and Smart Sidebar came in pretty handy.

The latest ColorOS version also introduced a new take on widgets, allows you to enlarge folders, and new options for Always-On Display. These make for even better customization options and all are very welcome.

The OS did come with quite a lot of pre-installed apps though, a lot of which you can uninstall but I prefer them not installed at all or at least pick which ones I have installed.

A phone’s operating system, especially if a custom skin, will definitely depend on the person. I think ColorOS 13 is a good update with features that I think I can and will use down the line.

A Decent Upper Mid-range Daily Driver

The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G does a lot of things well. Among these things include the performance courtesy of the Dimensity 8100-Max, 12GB RAM, and a 120Hz AMOLED panel. Its 32MP front camera, 50MP main sensor, and 80W SuperVOOC technology also add even more value to the device.

These really offered a really good experience with the device as a daily driver. Is it the best in its weight class out there? Probably not. The upper mid-range market is quite an interesting space with phones like the Nothing Phone (1), Xiaomi 12T, and vivo V23 out there. While a little under it, there’s the Xiaomi 12 Lite.

I think the Reno8 Pro 5G ticks a lot of boxes in what you’d want in a daily driver, especially an upper midrange one. However, I don’t think it stands out enough aside maybe from its design or the 80W SuperVOOC charging. That aside, I think it’s still worth checking out though.

Ram found his love and appreciation for writing in 2015 having started in the gaming and esports sphere for GG Network. He would then transition to focus more on the world of tech which has also began his journey into learning more about this world. That said though, he still has the mentality of "as long as it works" for his personal gadgets.
