YouTube introduced the Premium service as the way you are supposed to watch videos without the ads while content creators still earn from their works. To experience the ad-free experience without paying, the YouTube Vanced app allowed users to block ads for free. The team recently announced that it is shutting down.

In the coming days, the download links on the website will be taken down. We know this is not something you wanted to hear but it’s something we need to do. Thank you all for supporting us over the years.

A lot of creators have been questioning the “ethics” of using this app for a long time now. Vanced has given Android users a way to block ads for free avoiding the USD 11.99 subscription. This is contrary to YouTube’s premium service because this is where the creators’ revenue will come from.

Additionally, aside from the ads that show up before and after the videos, sponsor segments by the creators can also be skipped. A user-generated allow list for channels was available. While the advertising in the Home tab and those that are part of the merchandise and movie/TV purchases could be disabled.

Vanced also added premium features like background play and free picture-in-picture (PiP). The app also included an AMOLED black theme, swipe brightness/volume controls, and the ability to see the dislike counts again.

Moreover, on the Vanced Telegram channel, the devs said the termination was ”done due to legal reasons” then a Reddit comment added reasons as to why they “had to do it”.

Future developments of YouTube Vanced will surely stop now and the download button will be removed.
