You read that right, carbon fiber. Carbon fiber has traditionally been used sparingly in phones because it blocks radio waves but the German-based company, Carbon Mobile used its proprietary HyRECM technology – (Hybrid Radio Enabled Composite Material) which was developed for over four years. It combines high-quality fibers with a composite material that allows radio waves to pass through.

Because the monocoque design has no internal frame, all components are attached to the carbon fiber itself. Plastic makes up less than 5% of the material used. The phone can be disassembled and converted to raw materials.

The Carbon 1 MK II has a 6-inch AMOLED display with 1080×2160 resolution. A 20MP front camera is housed in a bezel up top. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. Because of its material, it is very light at 125g and thin at 6.3mm.

The rear features the dual camera setup with two 16MP sensors that share the same focal length and same f/2.0 aperture.

Under the hood, it is powered by a MediaTek Helio P90 chipset coupled with 8GB of LDPPDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.1 of internal storage expandable via microSD slot. The carbon fiber phone also features a 3000mAh battery that is said to charge up to 50% in 30 minutes via USB-C 3.1 port.

It will run on Android 10 out of the box with the Android 11 is coming in the second quarter. Carbon Mobile has also promised two years of software updates and monthly security patches. Other features include Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD, NFC, GPS/GLONASS/Galileo, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Carbon 1 MK II can now be pre-ordered for EUR 800 and will soon come to physical stores in Germany.

That said though, he still has the mentality of "as long as it works" for his personal gadgets.
