Samsung has just announced the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, 108MP sensor for smartphones which comes in collaboration with Xiaomi. This is the world’s first mobile camera sensor that goes beyond 100MP.

Prior to the announcement, Xiaomi and Samsung worked together for Xiaomi’s 64MP that incorporates Samsung’s 64MP ISOCELL GW1 sensor.

The Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX will still be a 0.8μm image sensor but increases the sensor size to 1/1.33”, a first for a smartphone camera. This allows it to deliver large 12032×9024 resolution photos, comparable to DSLRs. The large sensor size helps the HMX to absorb more light in less than ideal conditions, while Smart-ISO helps the sensor select the right ISO intelligently to match the needs of the environment.

The HMX sensor uses Samsung’s Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technologies. These allow it to generate bright, big-pixel 27MP images. The sensor also supports 6K (6016×3384 resolution) video recording at 30 fps.

It is expected that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be the first smartphone to feature the new sensor. Mass production of the 108MP sensor is said to begin later this month. We may not have to wait long until we see the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX in smartphones.
