Counterpoint, a market research firm recently released data which shows that in June and July of 2017, Huawei has overtaken Apple in global smartphone sales, and has become the second largest smartphone manufacturer just behind Samsung. There’s a very good chance that it will also happen for August.

What makes it interesting is that none of its phones have actually reached the top ten best selling single-model list. Whereas the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus took two spots, while the iPhone 6 placed 8th. OPPO smartphones made it to third and fourth, with Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4X taking 6th place. The remainder were occupied by Samsung devices: the Galaxy S8, S8+, J7 Prime, and A5 (2017).

According to Counterpoint’s Research Director Richard Peterson, the brand’s strength lies in its ability to scale in research, development, manufacturing, channel acquisition, as well as in promotion.

“While this streak could be temporary considering the annual iPhone refresh is just around the corner, it nevertheless underscores the rate at which Huawei has been growing.” – Richardson.

Huawei’s limited market reach will still need to be addressed in order for the company to realistically grow in certain markets such as India, South Asia and North America.
