The Meizu MX4 Pro smartphone has finally become available in the Philippines through local electronics distributor Novo7Tech. It’s the follow-up to last year’s Meizu MX4, and brings a number of innovative new features to the table.

The MX4 Pro’s spec sheet is headlined by an eye-popping 546 PPI touchscreen display that measures 5.5-inches across and boasts a resolution of 2560×1536 pixels. It’s effectively the first phone on the local market with a 2K display, and it’s a sight to behold. It sits behind a thin layer of Gorilla Glass 3 for protection.

Novo7Tech’s I.T. Director Adrian Lim walked us through some of the new features on the Meizu MX4 Pro. During his quick demo at the Novo7Tech flagship store at Gateway Mall, Cubao, Quezon City, he touched on the above-mentioned display, the aircraft-grade aluminium body, the high-fidelity stereo speakers, and the powerful onboard cameras.

The main camera on the Meizu MX4 Pro is a Sony Exmor RS series camera with an IMX220 BSI sensor. It’s capable of capturing 20.7-megapixel still photos and up to 4k resolution HEVC video at 30 fps in H.265. It’s accompanied by a built-in flash that has a total of two LED bulbs.

Physically, the MX4 Pro is surprisingly not that big. It measures 9mm thick and only weighs 158 grams, plus the bezels flanking the screen have been made as small as possible.

The MX4 Pro also features a redesigned Home button. Instead of the circular “halo” capacitive touch button that first appeared on the MX4, the MX4 Pro uses a now-rectangular tactile hardware button — which also happens to be touch-sensitive.

And not only that, but this new hardware key also has an integrated fingerprint scanner. It’s omnidirectional, which leads to some pretty nifty ways to unlock your phone with your fingerprints. Mr. Lim of Novo7Tech showed us how it’s possible to use the fingerprint scanner no matter what direction or orientation your finger is placed on the sensor.

In a side-by-side commparison with the original MX4, the MX4 Pro showed itself to be bigger mainly because of its screen. But the OS and the skin running on top of it remains the same, what with these two phones running flyme OS 4.1 (which is based on Android 4.4 KitKat). We were told that a software update may be issued OTA at some point in the future.

If you’ve been waiting for the MX4 Pro, the best time for you to buy it is today. It’s available in gunmetal gray with 32GB of internal storage, 3GB RAM, a single micro SIM slot, and a non-removable 3,350mAh battery for P20,990.
