I was thinking of a name for our planned business. I am using Google Translate to check on the translation of some words that I want for our business because I am thinking of having our business name in Latin or Spanish, or any language that would really sound good. Then I noticed a new change, there is Google Translate in Cebuano.

Since I was amazed I immediately tried it. The translation is not that accurate but at least you will have an idea of the meaning in Cebuano especially if you do not really know anything about the dialect. Cebuanos, be proud! Among hundreds of languages and dialects, the internet search engine giant included your dialect in Google Translate.

According to the leaked information, Skyfire 2.0 will be launched this weekend, ready to take the spotlight from the MyPhone A919i and the soon to be launched O+ 8.15. Priced at PhP7,999, this phone features a 5-inch IPS scratch proof screen, 1.2 Ghz quad core processor, 1gb ram and 2,000mAh battery.

I’m big fan of O+ as they continuously exercise innovation as evidenced by Air Shuffle featured in most of their Android smartphones. The build quality of their smartphones are very solid, almost similar to the material used by Samsung and Nokia. It’s also worth noting that their retail packaging also stands out, something akin to Alcatels’ and HTC’s.

This week, we are slated to release our review of the 8.52 and the 8.6. These phones can readily take on Samsung’s budget smartphones, Galaxy Fame and Galaxy S Duos respectively.

It just so happened that today is Labor Day and I am writing this right now.

On my way home yesterday from a meeting with my fellow bloggers at Greenbelt 3, I happened to pass by a certain area where in there a lots of policemen and guards. In front of the building are improvised tents made of sacks wherein a group of people stays. I saw on their banner that they are from the Digitel Employees Union. To my curiosity, I stayed for a couple of minutes and observed why they are there and tried to talk to a few people from where the guards cannot see me.

I’ve found out that these people from DEU have been requesting to be absorbed by PLDT as the new parent company of Digitel. It was known to almost everyone that PLDT had a merger with Digitel. After PLDT acquired Digitel, the former offered a voluntary retirement program to the latter’s employees. But come to think of it that if it is a voluntary retirement program, why would these people stay on that place and rally for them to be heard. Some of them said that the retirement program is just a sugar coating to what PLDT really want—for them to be out of the picture. They have been protesting since April 10.

When I got home, I tried to check on the online news to see what was that rallying really all about. In an issue of the Business Inquirer, according to DEU, PLDT has threatened the Digitel employees that they will be removed from their posts and a lower retirement package will be given to them. There was also a decision from the Supreme Court issued last January 21 stating that PLDT should recognize and negotiate with the labor union. But DEU said that the telco giant defied that order.

On that same article that I have read, PLDT said that majority of the affected employees already accepted the retirement package. PLDT also said that they have an alternative employment available to the two-thirds of those employees, and those who were not given the opportunity for that employment were given various forms of assistance during transition program on top of the retirement package. But the people of Digitel Employees Union said that everything is just for PLDT to replace them with contractual employees.

On my personal point of view, quoting the decision of the Supreme Court that  PLDT should recognize and negotiate with the labor union, PLDT indeed should not force anyone to accept that retirement package. Instead, they should offer them a more acceptable one. Yes, I believe that PLDT is doing it for the profitability of their business for the long haul, but you will probably agree with me that the welfare of the employees must also be the company’s major responsibility.

Through its partners, Globe strengthens its efforts in environmental protection.

Last 2010 they launched an annual biking event which, Globe employees, together with other eco warriors ride around the trails of Cordillera to raise funds for the program which they call Roots and Shoots. As part of its community involvement, Globe has partnered with Cordillera Conservation Trust (CCT). Their goal in the Roots and Shoots is to put up seedling nurseries in public elementary schools across Benguet.

“The Roots and Shoots Nursery Program is a sustainable approach to forest-building because not only do we involve the beneficiary communities, but we also transform them to become stewards of the environment.”

The Roots and Shoots program is not only for establishing seedling nurseries but also to strengthen the environmental education and awareness for children in public elementary schools. This is also a way in providing livelihood both for the school and the community.

Globe and the Philippines Sea

Another of Globe’s advocate is also to save the shores of the Philippines. In this goal, Globe has partnered with Save Philippine Seas . They are aiming to save and protect the Tresher Sharks which are already endangered species.

We would like to thank Globe for providing a unit for testing and review. Installation was pretty straightforward: all we needed to do was put on the sim and battery, installed the driver for initial setup and configured it through its neatly designed web-based admin panel (through 192.168.1.1 default router IP).

One thing I noticed which is quite confusing – although Globe is marketing this mifi (mobile wifi) as 4G enabled, the preferred network ticked on the admin panel is locked to 3G only. That’s something that we need to check with @JoyceOfGlobe or @KenOfGlobe how we can unlock it so it can support 4G network. Conversely, I will update this article once I got an advice that worked. Stay tuned as well for our unbiased review and incremental posts and tweets about how this mifi works. We believe that although that the unit we’re going to use is provided by Globe, it would also help them better their service if we provide a highly objective and reality-based review.

When the event is about to end, everyone in the event was surprised by another announcement. We only expected Cherry Mobile to launch the Omega HD – because that’s what’s on the invitation – but we were surprised to know that they announced another one — Flame 2.0, their first quad core phone.

I am amazed by this smartphone since it has some features of the leading brands but at a more affordable price. It also has picture in picture technology where in you can take photos and record videos using both cameras. You probably heard that the recently announced Galaxy S4 has that kind of technology. Not too shabby, Cherry Mobile. It has a 1.2 quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, which makes it really fast compared to the previous releases of Cherry Mobile. It has a very smooth interface and can compete with some of the leading smartphone brands. Should I say, quite better that some of those?
