Also, there may be other android tablets in the market right now offering a higher specifications but there is no assurance when it comes to durability. The box of the Glory 2 is the same as the packaging of the Idol Ultra and Scribe HD. Built and Specifications

The Alcatel One Touch Glory really fits in my hand. It is small and sexy and I can easily use it with one hand operation. It is quite thicker than Idol Ultra and Scribe HD. It has a smooth finish at the back giving me a good grip while holding it. This is already beautiful for an entry-level smartphone. I haven’t tried it features yet but I will give you an update once I have put the unit on a very good spin.

Being small and sexy, Glory is already packed with a 1Ghz CPU. It is very easy to use. It is running on Android Jelly Bean 4.1 but earlier I just had an update to Jelly Bean 4.1.1. It has 3.2MP camera that lets it users capture random photos. This may not be a good as the Idol Ultra and Scribe HD but I can say that it has a lot to offer when competing with other entry-level smartphones from its competitors.

The Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD has a very sexy feel on my hands. It’s design is fit for professional women that’s why this is also one of my top choice for mother’s day gift. It has a matte finish at the back which is the same with my Idol Ultra and its camera is embossed. It is thin and light weight and boasts a High Definition screen with awesome viewing angle. You can even watch a video without the headset because the speakers are already loud enough to hear the sound.

The Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD has a 1.2 Ghz Quad core processor. It uses MediaTek MT6589 for its system Chip, 1GM RAM and has a 4gb memory expandable up to 32gb. Obviously, the specs are way better than Idol Ultra but costs lesser (PhPPhp13,490). Do take note though that Scribe HD is more positioned as a note-taking and productivity device at the expense of portability and sleekness.

Need for Speed Most Wanted runs very smooth. I have not tested it on other HD and 3D games but I will post a follow-up review of this device on those kind of games.

It is running on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 out of the box.

Battery

Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD has an impressive battery life. At 21% it has been up for more than 26 hours and has been used for more than four hours. I was able to download a 500MB video file and also watched it on this device.

Camera

The Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD has an 8MP camera which captures high quality images. It also has a LED flash at the back for shooting in low light or dark scenarios.

Panorama of Scribe HD is clear and it can be compared with the panorama of my Samsung Galaxy Note II. (See review of Note 2 here and here.)

SIM Card Management

This is one of the best feature that a Dual SIM phone can have. Not all Dual SIM phones has this features.

You can set your default SIM that will be used for Data Connection, Video Calls, Text Messaging, and Voice Calls. You can also set it as Always Ask so that you will be asked which SIM card is to be used for each action.

You can also set the SIM Card information. You can change the indicator name, choose whether you would like to display it first or last four digits, and you can also change its back ground color.

The Message app looks like this. On the bottom of each message you will see the indicator of the network of which SIM card was the message sent to. You will also identify it by the color of the indicator.
Sound Profiles

You also have an option to set your sound profiles, so that it will be easy for you to switch it whenever you are at home, in your office, driving, or outdoor. You can also personalize it by assigning a name to each profile. There is also an option wherein you can boost the bass sound if you will be using a headphone.

Default Saving Memory

Most Jelly Bean phones does not have this kind of option. With Alcatel One Touch Scribe HD, you get to choose your saving memory whether Internal Memory of the External Memory Card. This is where your applications and file will be installed. One of the most unique features of this phone is this Default Write Disk.

Unboxing

The Special Ops – Patrol Case is placed inside an attractive retail box. Opening the retail box isn’t too difficult as I only had to softly pry open the transparent hard plastic cover. I pulled the plastic nib out which eventually made me take out the paper inner cover from the neon-orange pedestal. Once the inner cover was out, I simply slided out the inner plastic container where the case is placed. I took out the case and removed the manual in it.

Installing the case is a different case, pun intended. It wasn’t too easy as I thought, but I highly understood it as I was putting on a case that’s meant to protect my device and not the other way around. Don’t get me wrong though – it wasn’t too easy to install, but it wasn’t too difficult either.

Impressions

The case has 2 layers – 1 soft band inner layer where the D30 Impact Material is wrapped around and another layer (front and back covers) that encloses the  inner layer. These layers add a bit of heft, but do not make our iPhone look bulky.

All the hard buttons and speakers are exposed well, making all these functionalities usable even if the phone is fully covered and protected. The rotation/mute switch and the sleep/wake button are quite hard to reach due to the slightly deep recesses on respective areas.

My son accidentally dropped my phone (from 2.5 feet) a day ago, but I didn’t see any dent on the case. More importantly, the phone is still intact and working in pristine condition.

Overall, this is a bang for your buck impact protection case. Sure, you can buy a more expensive case, but the Tech21 Special Ops Patrol case provides similar protection without spending too much. This case is available at all Beyond the Box retail stores for only PhP2,200.

It was last 1999 when I first used an Alcatel phone. I was in third year high school then. I forgot the phone model but it was an orange bulky safeguard-soap-shape like phone, probably one of the largest phones at that time. But of course that is already one of the high end phones during then and only a few have GSM phones. And now, I am using an Alcatel phone but this time I am using the thinnest smartphone in the market—the Alcatel One Touch Idol ULTRA 6033. Let’s take a look at this new phone from ALCATEL.

After being out of the mainstream in the past few years, Alcatel made a big come back with their Alcatel One Touch Series phones. I am really excited to try it and to see for myself what Alcatel is really up to right now.

The Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra is a lot different from what we used to know about Alcatel phones. Being a smartphone, the speed and functionality is very interesting. It also has built in apps like Facebook, Twitter, Office Suite, Evernote, Linkedin, and PicSay. It even has a one-year subscription of AVG Mobile AntiVirus for Android. These apps make the phone suitable both in social and business. It has One Touch Manager which makes Files and Data Transfer easier using the USB cable or Wifi connection. It also supports wifi tethering.

Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra is available for Php14,990. You can also visit Sun Shops and this is free at Sun Plan 999. It also appeared several times in Iron Man 3 as it is dubbed as the movie’s official mobile phone.

Cherry Mobile Flame 2.0 physically looks like an ordinary Android device. It’s indeed thinner and lighter from the previous models released. I find it look better than the previous Flame.

Flame 2.0 has a 4.5-inch qHD IPS display, 4GB internal memory, and 1GB of RAM making it smooth when playing 3D games and Multi-tasking. I tried comparing its size to the Samsung Galaxy S3. Flame 2 is a bit thicker than the S3 but S3 is taller and wider than the Flame 2.0.

The size of the Flame 2.0 has a comfortable feel that makes it easier to hold. However, because it is quite tall; it is a bit hard to reach the Power/Sleep button when using one hand.

Flame 2.0 has the specs, features, and price that most of the local consumers have been waiting for. On top of the specs mentioned above, this smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon S4 processor. Snapdragon processor is best for multi-tasking and this is also the processor used by some leading brands of smartphones and tablets. With this Snapdragon Quad core processor, Cherry Mobile is really getting into the mainstream in the mobile phone business.

FLAME 2.0 will be available to the public this coming April 2013 with the srp of Php 6,999. We are expecting a huge crowd on this event so watch out for the announcement before all units become sold out.

I had the privilege of talking to the official distributor of Gionee Smartphones in the Philippines a month ago; they even gave me a glimpse of the phones that they are planning to launch. Sure you can see all of their phones in their official website, but you would agree with me that nothing beats the experience of holding and toying the phones with your hands.

One of the phones they launched last February 15 in the Philippines is the Ctrl V3, or simply CV3. Some people in China even call this as Control Victory, but I thought that it’s too flamboyant to say. Earlier, they gave me one to show you guys how it looks, how it fares and how it could compete in the market where dual-core phones are less than PhP5,000.

The retail box is all paper but has a glossy finish. The picture of the phone infront of the box was neatly printed and the specifications (list) at the back is very readable.

First Impressions

The CV3 is a slate device, so expect this to look like most of the Android smartphones you know. In fact, the device reminds me of the Cherry Mobile Flare although I find the CV3 classier and more robust.

The phone has a dimension of 130mm (height) and 67mm (width). For comparison purposes, the phone is 5% longer and 12% wider than the iPhone 5. The slightly ridged back panel makes it nonslippery, very comfortable to hold and resistant to smudge. The screen though is quite the opposite as it attracts smudge and finger prints.

As previously stated, it has a 4.3 inches scratch-resistant IPS WVGA screen with One Glass Solution (OGS Technology), which make the phone slimmer, quicker, clearer and lighter. That OGS sounds too technical but in my experience, the CV3 has indeed impressive viewing angle. This is technically one of the differentiating factor of the CV3 and some of the phones Gionee will introduce in the future.

The phone is pre-installed with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Sitting on top of the OS is a UI or skin that Gionee interface. It isn’t as heavily customized compared to HTC Sense and Sony Timescape but Gionee did a good job in pre-installing a tool that lets me make my own theme via Theme Skin.

The Gionee CTRL V3 is priced at PhP8,499 is available at Memo Xpress, Electronics Boutique, KSCI (Davao), Isupplytech (Paranaque), Boracay PC (Boracay), KYG ( Binondo) and RLPC Solution Puerto Prinsesa Palawan.

User Experience

The SmartWatch is a wearable gadget, thus the experience is both corporeal and digital. It may be too big as a watch but it’s surprisingly light! Checking the time or notifications like Facebook™ and Twitter™ updates sent from my Android phone to my watch is a very pleasant experience. Glancing to the watch once in a while is a James-Bond-esque experience like no other. Too bad, voice and video calling is not possible on this device. Dialing and receiving call from the watch is possible on the watch if you’re using an Xperia phone.

Pairing this device on my phone is like a walk in the park. Although this device works perfectly on Sony’s Xperia line of handsets and Sony Tablets S & P, this is also compatible with HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire, HTC Wildfire S, Motorola Defy, Motorola Droid 2/Milestone 2, Motorola RAZR, Orange San Fransisco, Samsung Galaxy 5, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Fit, Samsung Galaxy Gio, Samsung Galaxy Mini, Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy SL.

The vibration and screen alert from its 1.3″ OLED screen are the SmartWatch’s best alternative to the missing audible alert.

I heavily tested the battery of this watch and to my surprise, it did last for almost 4 days. There’s a catch though – that’s 4 days “unpaired” from my Xperia S. The watch’s battery only lasted 2 days when paired with my phone, which – I believe – is still impressive.

Amazingly, this device is both dust proof and splash proof and comes with a black rubber wristband included in the box. It’s also very genius of Sony to include a watch band adapter and spring bars (for use with any 20mm wide watch strap) inside the box. The supplied black rubber wristband looks very nice but I still bought myself a 500-peso worth bracelet at Swiss Gear.

Apps for the SmartWatch

Displaying apps on the SmartWatch requires the SmartWatch app on any Android 2.1 devices. I already downloaded this app and a truckload of SmartWatch apps on the Play Store prior to buying this device. This made it very easy for me to pair the watch on my phone. To date, there are more than 300 free and paid apps compatible for the SmartWatch on PlayStore.

The SmartWatch app on the phone works as the controller for the SmartWatch. It let me display the apps on my SmartWatch as widgets or simply “tap-able” icons. Notice that I use the word ‘display’ rather than ‘install’. This is because you do not install the apps in the watch, but you simply display it through seamless Bluetooth connection between the phone and the watch. Pretty clever, right?

LiveView and SmartWatch compared

The SmartWatch is a follow-up to the LiveView. Undoubtedly, the SmartWatch is a worthy and awesome upgrade as it displays more information and boasts more features and apps. I kind of missing the LED notification light of the LiveView on the SmartWatch. It would’ve been nice to see it on the SmartWatch too.

If you’re short on budget, the Sony LiveView is still a good alternative. It costs PhP1,450 at Widget City.

Verdict

Wouldn’t it be easier to check your phone notifications on your watch instead of “flashing” your phone?
