Neo recently reached another milestone as it enters the gaming arena with the release of the Elan series. This latest line-up of products from the company was developed to gratify Pinoy gamers.

What this series can boast of are the integration of the powerful Intel processor plus the innovative Windows 8 OS in its laptop units.

Furthermore, Neo deepened its commitment and support to its customers as it partnered with 3 distinguished entities in the gaming industry: Blizzard -the developer of Diablo and Starcraft, Level Up! – the developer of Ragnarok Online, and Mineski – a group that endeavors to uplift professional gaming in the country. These tie-ups serve as a proof that the Elan series satisfies the gamers’ needs and meets the gamers’ taste.

Now, here’s a glance on the new gaming laptops of Neo:

Apple has recently announced a wide-array of new devices? How much are these devices here in the Philippines? What's my recommendation? Check out this article.

The post Apple Announced iPad Mini and 4th Gen iPad, Shipping Starts on November 2 in the US appeared first on Gadget Pilipinas.

As expected, Apple has finally announced the iPad Mini. In essence, the iPad mini is reminiscent of the 3rd Gen iPad; but smaller and with an iPhone 5-esque form factor. iPad Mini.I will not bore with a lot of stuff about the new iPad but I’ll give you a rundown of what I like about it instead:

It’s 7.9 inches, no retina display but the same resolution compared to the New iPad

It has the A5 processor.

10 hours of battery life with moderate usage; longer if you only use it as decoration

It’s “every inch an iPad”

I find this not too innovative, but worth buying considering its price which starts at $329 or roughly arround PhP13,500 – PhP15,000 if becomes available here in the Philippines.

This might officially becomes available in the Philippines on November 25. Telcos (Globe and Smart) might start offering it together with the iPhone 5 by then too.

My recommendation: BUY

4th Gen iPad. Unsurprisingly, Apple also announced the 4th Generation iPad, which phases out the current iPad model. If you are thinking of replacing your 3rd Gen New iPad with the 4th Gen New iPad, the you might want to reconsider your thoughts? If speed and new connector don’t matter to you, then stay away from it. Look at the iPad Mini instead.
My recommendation: DON’T BUY
Here’s a detailed comparison among all iPads for your reference. New iMac. What’s even more interesting is the new iMac? I totally thought that replacing our old iMac would be a great idea. It’s slimmer and with a new and faster processor. It’s perfect if you want to become productive! It isn’t portable though. They also introduced a new drive which basically optimizes application usage and file storage. Think of it as a hybrid hard drive – a fusion of SSD or Solid-State drive (just like your flash drive, but way way faster) and HDD or hard disk drive (yeah, the one with rotating disk inside). These drives are totally separated but work harmoniously together. Price of the entry-level iMac starts at $1299 or around PhP56k to PhP60k here in the Philippines.
My recommendation: BUY
New Mac Mini. Another Mac that is worth looking at is the New Mac Mini. If you do not own a Mac, but you are considering to buy one, then getting the Mac Mini would be perfect for you. This entry-level Mac is only $599 -PhP28,990 here in the Philippines. It comes in different flavors: 2.5 Dual-core , 2.3 Quad-Core and server variants.
My recommendation: BUY
13″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display. The little brother of the recently announced 15″ Macbook Pro was finally announced earlier. It’s amazingly thinner than the previous 13″ Macbook Pro and with stunning Retina Display. Price starts at $1,699 or PhP 82,990 here in the Philippines. [Buy now.]
My recommendation: BUY
Gallery

I don’t want to be quite cerebral here. Making lots of moolah is now more important for Apple. Being one of the most valued companies in the US, the timing of the announcement and release of their devices – mostly iterations – are hooked up to the projected stock price of Apple before the year ends, which should be about more than $700/share.

1. Significant increase when the New iPad was announced in February.

2. Slight increase when the iPhone 5 was announced in September

3. Stocks are expected to rise very significantly before December brought about by combined sales of all devices during Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas Season.

With all these new devices that Apple announced, I don’t see any shadow of doubt that Apple will emerge as the ultimate winner. We very well know that Apple charges higher premium when it comes to pricing their devices compared to Android devices. That’s a given. But at the end of the day, we all have to be mindful of the things we purchase. Do you really need it? If you’re buying because you just want it, then by all means, signify your interest to buy an Apple Stock because that would totally be a win-win situation.

Let’s spark up the discussion. What do you think of Apple’s new devices? Are you going to buy one?

Steve Jobs finally introduced Facetime for Mac at last week’s Apple’s Back to Mac event. He announced it at 2am here in Manila, and I didn’t think twice to try it out immediately when he said that the Beta version is already available. Too bad, I didn’t know anyone who was still up that time with an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch.

Immediately the next day, I asked my brother to download Facetime and to call me when I’m online. Boom – 5 seconds later, we were facetiming;

Placing a Facetime call via Contacts

If you’re Facetiming on your Mac, the orientation automatically changes if the person on the other line changes orientation too. Totally cool!

I was facetiming my brother and my son using a congested WiFi network, thus I experienced lots of lags. Nevertheless, the experience was moving and mind-blowing. Got a mac and a friend with an iPhone 4 or the latest iPod Touch? Download the Beta Version of Facetime for Mac here.

Our fellow bloggers and press people officially hated us when we won the grand prize last Tuesday in Intercontinental Hotel at Samsung’s Notebook Launch. The grand prize – the Samsung NP-R440. Owning this during the night of the launch makes Gadget Pilipinas the first ever owner of a Samsung laptop in the Philippines. We nailed it, bigtime. We hurriedly went back to our base after a dose of San Mig light and unboxed our prize with too much enthusiasm.

It wasn’t that hard to open the box and I was quite surprised that it contained a free bag inside. The free bag looks pretty sweet but it can literally expose the fact that I’m carrying around a precious hardware. I continued on removing the other boxes inside the big box and saw usual stuff in a brand new notebook – manual, warranty and intro leaflets, the power cord, adapter and battery. And then finally, it was time for me pull up the main package – the Samsung NP-R440.

If you are like Shawn Spencer of the TV series Psych – which means you diligently look for details -, the R440 doesn’t look like your average notebook. This model comes in Samsung’s new Touch of Color crystal finish, with an S pattern elegantly designed in the notebooks front cover. Translation: it has this Piano-black finish with S-pattern, which in turn make it look like a piece of art with an attitude.

I opened the notebook and the chiclet keyboard and the regular sized multi-gesture trackpad said ‘hello’, while the 14.0″ LED HD gloss screen said ‘hi’. The experience was not that awesome but it felt really good. I readied the 6-cell battery, which I found really nice because of its Macbook-like consumption meter, and hooked it into the computer. I pressed the ON button, which by the way lit the small blue led indicator, and looked at the magic of the OEM Windows 7 Home Basic’s post installation processes.

After the installation process, it was time for me to test the embedded beasts in the notebook – the i3 350M (2.26 Ghz, 3MB) processor, 2GB DDR3 memory, ATI Mobility Radeon HD5145 (512mb) and the 320gb SATA hard drive. The parts make a mid-range notebook, but decent enough to fulfill your media-oriented work and leisure goals.

The i3 processor may be the lowest variant among the line of iCore processors but its capability can rival its brother, i5 processor. On the plus side, the i3 is the cheaper alternative of the i5 processor without the Turbo mode. In my opinion, someone who isn’t so much of a power user like me and uber-geeks like Bill Gates does not need the i5 nor the i7 processors.

Playing video games or rendering your latest youtube video masterpiece is pretty decent on the R440. Of course, expect it to be less stunning because of the embedded mid range (class 2) graphics card, the 512mb ATI Mobility Radeon HD5145. With this video card, I was only able to play Modern Warfare 2 at playable 55-60fps (low settings).

I was inspired to give Samsung a warm round of applause when the desktop finally loaded because I didn’t find more than 3 crapware (pre-installed applications that ruin that optimal startup/boot up time). Plus, the performance of Windows 7 Home Basic is topnotch; thanks to its powerful hardware.

Overall, the Samsung NP-R440 is a well-crafted device with hardware specifications that wouldn’t disappoint you. In terms of price (SRP PhP 39,999), it may be far more expensive that its closest rival (which is quite a downer), the Asus K42Jr, but it doesn’t fall short in meeting my creative demands of producing home-made movies, photo manipulation projects and video gaming frenzies. The good thing is that we got lucky last Tuesday so we didn’t have to pay anything for this baby.

Sanmsung R440 (left) and Asus K42Jr (far right)

Believe it or not, the Samsung N220′s specs closely resemble the Samsung N150 I featured just recently except for 2 glaring differences. The latter commensurates for the 3,000 differences compared to the N150; but is it really worth it?

Last Tuesday, Samsung released their latest range of netbooks in the guise of the N150 and N220. The 2 variances are essentially similar except for the battery life, processor speed and design. There is two noteworthy features that I found on the N220 that N150 lacks – the 14-Hour battery life and the Phoenix Hyperspace™ “Instant ON”.

14 hours of usage time? Get out of here. Apparently, according to Samsung – its usage time is the model’s most celebrated feature. Imagine, this netbook can withstand your boredom and it can stay on even if you’re already sick tired of your work.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Hyperspace™ “Instant ON” allows the devices to turn on and immediately go online without having to wait for Windows to boot. Well, think of it as a dedicated operating system that instantly boots if you wish to go online, watch movies and check your latest Facebook gossips without having to go through the 15-20 second boot time of the Windows 7 OEM of the netbook. Pretty slick, right?

Here’s how Hyperspace looks like in action:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Here’s the full comparison of the specs of both netbooks:

Check out some pics of the Samsung N220:

Samsung’s New Netbook Extend The Limits of Style and Mobility

Samsung’s N220 Plus 10.1” netbook delivers all-day battery life with up to 14 hours of power in an elegant crystal pattern design

Samsung Electronics Philippines, Corp (SEPCO), a market leader in consumer electronics, and world leader in IT Technology, today launched the latest addition to its award-winning range of netbooks, the Samsung N220 Plus, which offers up to 14 hours of secure connected mobility. The impressive battery powered performance is possible because overall power consumption is reduced by their energy efficient LED display, optimized performance and Samsung’s proprietary Enhanced Battery Life Solution.

The N220 Plus also has several display features that enhance its user’s visual experience. The new netbook’s 10.1” LED anti-reflective display fine tunes movies and images with the sharpest images and boldest colors, and there is no mirror effect under bright lights or in sunny weather. Using the integrated Easy Resolution Manager Tool, screen resolution can easily be changed if a program or game needs to be viewed in 1024 x 768. For added visual enhancements, the new N220 Plus offers an integrated Digital LiveCam for video-conferencing or live messaging.

The N220 Plus also comes with a range of tools for greater ease of use and securing your PC. Firstly, the Phoenix Hyperspace™ “Instant ON” capacity allows the devices to turn on and immediately go online without having to wait for Windows to boot. The “Smart Power Management” allows the netbook to conserve more battery power without user intervention. The AnyPC remote PC access application enables a secure one-click connection to a home or office PC, making it safe and easy to transfer and view files on the go. Phoenix FailSafe ® software provides useful tool for tracking your pc if it’s stolen. This powerful theft deterrence service lets you track the location of a lost or stolen netbook and encrypt, manage, retrieve or erase your vital data.

The Samsung N220 Plus incorporates Intel’s latest processor, the Intel® Atom™ N470, which is specifically designed to deliver amazing Internet experience using netbooks. Based on an entirely new micro-architecture, the Intel® Atom™ processor increases energy efficiency to extend battery life, while delivering enhanced mobile performance and increased system responsiveness.

“Featuring Samsung’s new crystal design pattern, the Samsung N220 Plus lead the range with a pragmatic approach that takes ultra mobile computing into a whole new dimension. Longer battery life is an important issue for customers, and we are proud to deliver a feature rich netbook that allows you to get wirelessly connected easily, and for such a long time,” says Jefferson Cheng, SEPCO Product Manager for Netbooks and Notebooks.

Like other Samsung netbooks, the N220 Plus has been awarded the leading environmental and usability standard, TCO Certified and is ECO RoHS compliant. As well as being ergonomically designed for optimum ease and use of performance, Samsung netbooks are completely mercury free and consume significantly less power thanks to their LED backlit displays. Their ultra lightweight, robust and compact design also offers other ‘green’ advantages, as less energy is used in the manufacture and usage phase of their product life.

The Samsung N220 Plus is available in leading computer stores nationwide with a standard retail price of 24,900 pesos.

It’s small, robust, awesome but it can blow your pockets away!

That’s just a flash-forward of my verdict on Nokia’s latest and first netbook device that was released last October 2009. Don’t you ever click that ‘x’ button just yet. Stay in here. Read this review. Show me (and this gadget) some love.

After 2 weeks of tinkering the Nokia Booklet 3G, I had a fair share of experiencing its celebrated features – style, efficiency and portability. Style – its minimalistic yet robust look and feel; Efficiency- its capability to stay ‘connected’ and alive within 8-12 hours and to perform optimally for simple desktop processes and entertainment application; Portability – the convenience it can provide to its end-user.

(Click Continue Reading to view to complete review and pictures.)

STYLE

Lavishly built in resilient elemental aluminium, the Nokia Booklet 3G is almost reminiscent of Apple’s line of unibody Macbooks. It looks pretty solid and it seems like it can withstand the test of time. It’s piano-finish front panel was elegantly designed; it makes me want to lick it so bad use it as a mirror. The panel is too smudge-magnet, similar to EeePC 1005′s. Still, you can be proud to showcase this device once it’s out of its sleeve.

Its 10.1″, 1280 x 723 display is justified by virtue of its nature as a netbook. I would be surprised if Nokia built it with a 15″ display. The display almost looks like that of Macbook’s (again) though with a wider accent of glassy black, which lays the 1.3 megapixel webcam beneath it. The Nokia Booklet 3G sign was perfectly placed below the webcam. The black accent which covers about 17% of the monitor panel extends down to the keyboard, giving the device a minimalistic yet refined look.

The keyboard, built in a durable plastic frame, is one of the crowing glories of this device. Some keys are too small, but better compared to other netbooks. Since, I have the UK version, the character next to ‘@’ is ‘#’ but a ‘£’. The usual ‘#’ key sits right before the “Return” key. I normally would mistake “#” key as “Return” whenever I type without looking at the keys. Perhaps, because the “Return” key is too small or I just have big fingers. I also noticed that the Windows-key has a different feel when pressed. Over-all, my keyboard experience with this device was convenient with minute manageable issues.

The mousepad is about 2 inches wide and 1 inch height, which I believe is big but great for a netbook. My right thumb, which I primarily use to control the mousepad, didn’t ache after 2 hours using it. That, I guess, gives you lesser chance to have Carpal-Tunnel syndrome.

EFFICIENCY

Sticking with the premise that this device is a netbook, I did not expect that it is for a power-user like me. The Nokia Booklet 3G delivered 95% of my expectations – it is really neither for someone who wishes to play Mass Effect 2 nor render HD movie projects. Armed with Intel® Atom™ Z530, 1.6 GHz, the Nokia Booklet 3G is apparently powerful and decent enough to handle its pre-installed Windows 7 Starter and play your favorite games like Diner Dash and Plants vs Zombies.

The battery sucks….. NOT! I take it back – this device boasts a 16-cell battery pack inside. That’s 8-12 hours of battery life, but with the trade-off in its performance. The Atom processor (Z530) in this device doesn’t suck a lot of battery life, but provides sub-optimal performance. The battery-processor axiom of this netbook can be stated like this: with great battery life, comes low processor performance.

Still, who needs a lot of processor power if you only wish to finish some of your paperworks on the go or reap the “copious fruits” of your Farmville labor while on the road. All you need to do is to fully charge this device and bring it with pride and your jealous-inducing grin.

PORTABILITY

The inclusion of the Bluetooth/Wifi/3G adapters on this netbook paved the Nokia’s way to connect people (Connecting People, anyone?). Most netbooks have bluetooth and Wifi, but not most netbooks contain a sim-tray for your I-can-twitter-on-my-netbook-via-3G needs without buying SmartBro or Globe Tatoo USB 3G dongles.

Nokia also did a good thing in integrating your social networking and pictures upload profiles like Facebook, Twitter and Flickr in its Social Hub. Since this netbook supports text messaging, Social Hub also takes care in notifying you of new SMS messages and helps you edit, forward or reply to received text messages. All of these can be done through this lovely device. Truly awesome.

The HDMI port located on the left side of the netbook is both a blessing and curse. With it, you can hook it on your favorite TV with HDMI and instantly “convert” your 10.1 screen to a larger one in higher definition. You might have problems though if you need to connect your netbook to your older LCD projectors since the latter usually do not have HDMI outputs. This is a very important matter for sales people or professional trainers like me.

There’s nothing to worry about if you wish to sync lots of gadgets via USB on this device. It is because it can accomodate up to 3 USB devices at one time, thanks to its 3 USB2 ports located on its left (2) and right sides. And if 3 usb ports aren’t enough, then you may also sync your gadgets via its integrated Bluetooth adapter. Pairing my Nokia N900 with this device was hassle free. Nokia was so generous is putting all these things in just a device.

But wait…. there’s more. This netbook has accelerometer installed. The inclusion of this sweet high-end feature is basically for the purpose of securing your hard drive’s content in case the laptop “sensed” a fall or sudden trauma by “halting” or “parking” it. User notifications and settings for this feature are available in the Control Panel.

VERDICT

Nokia’s celebrated netbook, Nokia Booklet 3G is indeed packed with lots of awesome features – some of them are pretty high-end. Indeed, the marriage of elegant style, balanced efficiency and portability result to a device that’s so hard to resist. This could be one of the best netbooks for a Filipino like me especially during this era of Social Networking. (Imagine, about 600,000 Philippine based users log into Facebook every day.) Too bad, Nokia hasn’t announced the availability of this device in the Philippines yet.

Brace your purse though if it hits Philippine stores because it may cost around Php 27,000 (pre-tax) here in the Philippines. That’s not an ideal price for a netbook, but please cut this device some slack since it has everything you need and want for a netbook.

The existence of netbooks was threatened by the recent release of the Apple iPad and the JooJoo. Obviously, the latter two tablets are definitely irresistible with their eye-candy looks and impressive UI (user-interface). But will tablet PCs, like the iPad and JooJoo really put an end to the fate of netbooks such as the Nokia Booklet 3G?

Nokia, the leading mobile communications devices manufacturer, did not think so when they developed and released the Nokia Booklet 3G last November 2009. Now that the Nokia Booklet 3G is in my hands – thanks to WomWorld Nokia for lending it to me for 2 weeks – it made me realize that nothing still beats the power of the marriage of style, efficiency and mobility (I’ll talk about these 3 things on my full review of this product soon).

The Booklet 3G is the lovechild of Nokia’s mobile device leadership and their brave venture to create a device we never thought they’d make. Armed with the necessary power and speed to help you take the internet wherever you go, this netbook is definitely packed with pure awesomeness.

Here are my initial impressions of the Nokia Booklet 3G:

It’s ergonomic and eye-candy.

Mostly built in tough, resilient elemental aluminium, it looks pretty solid and it seems like it can withstand the test of time.

It’s thin. It even fits inside my leather organizer.

It has everything I need to connect… to people. (Thanks to its built in 3G, Wifi and bluetooth adapters)

Definitely not thinner than Macbook Air, but it looks better.

Some keys are small, but better compared to other netbooks.

Battery life doesn’t suck at all. With average use, it can be up for 7-8 hrs.

Quite pricey. Price may within the range of Php 28k to 37k.

Not yet available in the Philippines.

I’ll post my extensive review next week. In the meantime, enjoy looking at my unboxing photos below.
