Steve Jobs finally introduced Facetime for Mac at last week’s Apple’s Back to Mac event. He announced it at 2am here in Manila, and I didn’t think twice to try it out immediately when he said that the Beta version is already available. Too bad, I didn’t know anyone who was still up that time with an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch.

Immediately the next day, I asked my brother to download Facetime and to call me when I’m online. Boom – 5 seconds later, we were facetiming;

If you’re Facetiming on your Mac, the orientation automatically changes if the person on the other line changes orientation too. Totally cool!

I was facetiming my brother and my son using a congested WiFi network, thus I experienced lots of lags. Nevertheless, the experience was moving and mind-blowing. Got a mac and a friend with an iPhone 4 or the latest iPod Touch? Download the Beta Version of Facetime for Mac here.

[App Review] Osmos for iPad

Originally launched for the PC, Linux, Mac and iPhone/iPad, Osmos has finally arrived to the iPad and I’m blaming it for the sleepless night I had last week.

The goal of the game is pretty simple – place yourself in the “life” of a mote, propel yourself in a confined or sometimes uber-vast area and get big by absorbing other smaller organisms called motes. Don’t you ever dare absorbing bigger motes because they will just “terminate” you instead.

Propelling yourself as a mote is as easy as expelling some of your mass. Tap the outer-left part of yourself and you will propel to the right. Tap the outer-right part of yourself and you will propel to the left. Over tap, then you will become the smallest speck of organism in the vast area of larger motes and be absorbed by them a whole lot easier. Of course, you don’t want that to happen, right?

This game feature 3 zones or levels – sentient, ambient and force.

Osmos, in my honest opinion, is the simplest yet one of the most innovative games I’ve played so far on the iPad. I never got the chance to play it on the PC so I am lucky to have it played first on a touch-screen device such as the iPad. The game experience is like a roller coaster ride – it’s easy, then becomes difficult but, over-all, an enjoyable experience.

The graphics isn’t top notch but it doesn’t deviate from the game’s core essence – immerse yourself in the life of a mote and become big as the universe. The music creates a peaceful ambience and enhances the over-all experience of the game . It’s very calming, which suits perfectly to what the game wants you to feel especially during the stressing parts. I actually even used it just to relax – a perfect alternative to white noise for me.

Over-all, Osmos HD may not be the best looking game for the iPad but its shows a lot of promise. It is like the relaxing and “organic” version of Katamari; a simpler kind of your Spore creature; and a picture of how A-H1N1 virus spread into other cells and parts of your body. The gameplay and music is relatively addicting, so if you’re into merging motes and organs and sublime electronic music, then stay away from this game because you might end up playing this game like forever.

iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone and 3.2.1 for iPad (Jailbreakers, Stay Away) *UPDATE

Yes, the Apple iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone has arrived along with the 3.2.1 update for the iPad. But can it fix the “death grip” for iPhone 4 users?

The almost 400mb updates are not promising as we expected because it only addressed i-don’t-care issues like the signal bar sizes and perhaps, bugs from the previous build.

Changelog of iPad FW 3.2.1:

improved WiFi connectivity
fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail
Addressed an issue that could cause video playback to freeze
improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter
Added Bing as an option for Safari’s search field

Meanwhile, it is highly recommended for iphone/ipad jailbreakers to temporarily stay away from the said updates.

If you’re an avid music listener or someone with chronic movie-before-bedtime ‘disorder’, you might consider this application a ‘heaven sent’.

With Goodnight Timer, you can slowly reduce the volume of your PC, then shut down your computer after a few minutes or hours. This may be a good deal for someone who usually listens to music or watches a movie but eventually would fall asleep. (I just realized that this is the perfect app for my dad.)

This application is compatible with Windows XP. If you’re using Windows Vista/7, you need to use the compatibility mode for this application to work.
